Form and Agency

“Yeo Workshop is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Brandon Tay, a Singaporean artist whose practice is concerned with the emergent complexities related to digital materials. Primarily working through digital media, mediated sculptures, and the moving image, Tay’s works often complicate the distinctions between the tangible and the incorporeal, whilst addressing and contending with the relationality of their complex natures.”

I like this website interface because it shows Tay's exhibition in a virtual space, which increases accessibility to the artist's works for those who are not able to attend the exhibition in real life. The site’s interface feels clear to follow, but has artistic motifs that add sophistication and nuance. This includes a vertical navigation page, expressive fonts that extend into each other, and a futuristic colour palette. I particularly like how the site has a minimalistic interface, which allows the complex, chaotic work of Brandon Tay to remain the central feature of the website.

The Mala Project

"The Málà Project is a restaurant brand founded with a mission to deliver joy through neo-Sichuanese cuisine. From fiery MáLà Dry Pots to comforting Northern Chinese classics, it's a cozy place to gather round with friends and family."

The Málà project's website feels more like a sensory experience than a website. It leans into the nostalgia of a classic American-Chinese restaurant, through its use of warm colour gradients and the use of both English and Chinese characters. What I particularly enjoy about this website is its use of audio. Typical websites for restaurants have relatively simple interfaces, however the Málà Project feels more holistic and maximalist because it evokes both the visual and auditory senses. They have also included motion graphics, ambient and lo/fi sound and subtitle-like texts. It feels like I am watching a movie about the restaurant, and experiencing it in real time.

Amy Charlton

I like Amy Charlton's portfolio website specifically because it has an unserious and humorous energy. Her site is an unexpected way to display her work as an artist, and creates a sense of unease and confusion when navigating through the webpages. Her work has a very endearing yet disturbing quality to it, which can be quite inviting. Upon inspecting the page, I can see that Amy has built this site in Cargo, which is what I have used for my own personal design portfolio. Her website makes me think if maybe I could change my current portfolio website to make it a bit more “out there”. The hand-drawn and cartoonish style has also informed the style of my design assets for this site.

Cyborg Futures

Cyborg Futures is an open call and collaboration between artists, technologists, designers, engineers, makers, and scientists to create and develop technologies that expand human capabilities and perceptions. Artists of any discipline can propose a project idea that utilises a new sense, or augments those that already exist. However, the new sense or form of augmentation does not necessarily need to exist yet. This project furthers the Cyborg Foundation’s mission to support the use of cybernetics as part of the body and begin to introduce the diverse possibilities for artistic practices that feature extended sensory capabilities.

Gif Cities

Gif cities was a special release by the Internet Archive in 2016, to celebrate the “fun side” of the web. It is an animated Gif search engine, where one can search for gifs using phrases, images or ideas to access a range of different self-made gifs. It is a true reflection of internet users’ senses of humour and design and cultural interests throughout time, dating back to 1994.

The Wayback Machine

The Internet Archive/ Wayback Machine is a non-profit organisation that has built a digital library of websites, images and videos throughout time. Their mission is to provide universal access to all knowledge. Uploading media to the archive is free, and can be done by anyone with an account. I particularly like the search-by-year tool, as it allows you to experience the real designs, styles and cultural influences of specific periods in a relatively accurate way.
